Kentucky Glass Works Company – list of employees

This is a list of persons who were employed, at one time or another, at the Kentucky Glass Works Company of Louisville, with information extracted from contemporary Caron’s Louisville city directories (1880-1888).   A few entries are from the 1880 U.S. Census records.   The date(s) given are the year or years in which the employee’s name appeared in a directory.

A worker may have been employed for an unknown length of time before and/or after an appearance in any particular city directory issue.   In many instances, a worker was  employed elsewhere (often at one of the other glass works that operated in Louisville) during apparent “gaps” in their work record for this particular factory.

Information published in any of the directory issues could have been (and often was) collected during the previous year.  So keep in mind that a listing for “1885” may indicate a glassworker was actually employed there, at least for part of the time,  in 1884.  This list is certainly not complete or all-encompassing.  Some workers could have been employed for only a brief time, or were missed by canvassers for one reason or another and consequently were never listed in the directory.   A number of the employees were African American (Black) and were noted in some of the directory issues with a “c.” (indicating “colored”) after the name.

Misspellings (and sometimes duplicate listings) were common in older directories, and because of this the exact number of individuals listed is a bit murky, but I estimate I’ve recorded a total of about 227 employees in this roster.

I trust this info could be of interest to genealogists or anyone who has ancestors who worked in the Louisville glass manufacturing industry during the late Victorian era.    If anyone has genealogical information that might clarify the correct names (or add middle initials) for any of the individuals listed here, I invite you to write to me with that info!  (See my email address in “Contact Notes” near the very bottom of the webpage).

This factory operated from the fall of 1879 to (apparently) April of 1887.  The 1888 Louisville city directory included names of those who were presumably employed in 1887.

For more information on this company and the container ware they made, and identification marks used on bottles, flasks and fruit jars, please see my page on Kentucky Glass Works Company.

*  “apprentice” seems a bit incongruent (if he had been a glassblower many years earlier), so possibly a son with the same name??  Or this was merely an occupational description not quite applicable but nevertheless casually used by the directory canvasser.

**  possibly same individual as previous listing?

***  this may be the same individual as succeeding entry

****  this may be the same person as “Frank Schneider”

Note: This information was gleaned from city directories and census records (on microfilm) in the collections of the Louisville Free Public Library, and also from the FamilySearch.org research website.  I appreciate both of those sources and want to give them credit for research materials they have made available for use by the general public.
